Barriers Research

Posted on: 6 April 2016

NZTA (New Zealand Transport Agency) recently published a research report on ‘Quantifying the likelihood of barrier strike maintenance’. This piece of work was carried out by Dave Smith, Carl O’Neil and Robyn Hyde of Abley as well as Bruce Corben of Corben Consulting, Australia. The research looked at thousands of barrier crash records to ascertain the factors which increase the risk of barrier crashes and the cost of repairing them. They developed an interactive tool practitioners can use to calculate the likely number of accidents that will occur on a chosen section of barrier and the estimated annual cost of repairs. This is invaluable for asset managers and road controlling authorities when budgeting for road maintenance and will make it easier to ascertain the potential value of installing roadside barriers.
