Red-light running is a significant urban road safety issue in NZ.
Work completed by Abley for the NZ Transport Agency in 2014 identified that red-light running cameras have the potential to make sizeable contributions to road safety performance at intersections with a prevalence of red-light running behaviour. The work prioritised intersections for camera technology based on social cost savings that could be expected. The rollout of this technology adds to the toolbox of measures available to road controlling authorities to create a safe system.
