Domestic Airport Forecourt Operational Enhancement

The Challenge

To provide a preferred option for Auckland International Airport that increases the performance of the domestic terminal forecourt.  The solution is to be low cost in nature and able to be implemented in the near future.  The primary objectives are to reduce congestion, move free flow taxis to the Air New Zealand forecourt, and provide flexibility in forecourt use to address incidents.

The Solution

Numerous options were initially considered, incorporating various interventions and lane reallocation.  The preferred option (H1) addresses all the objectives, retains a familiar layout for the public, and provides a balance of mode uses across both the Air New Zealand and Jetstar forecourts.  It includes relocating pre-pay taxis to the Jetstar forecourt, enabling free-flow taxis to use Air NZ forecourt, re-establishing free-flow queuing, and remarking George Bolt Memorial Drive to two lane approach/ one lane exit.

The Outcome

The preferred option was well received by the client and is being progressively implemented.
