Design and accessibility for bus/ferry terminal

The Challenge

Auckland Transport proposed to provide new and extended bus services to connect to the Pine Harbour ferry service at its Pine Harbour terminus. The ferry service operates from 6.20am to 6pm from Pine Harbour and runs every 30 minutes at peak times.  It serves the fast growing Beachlands-Maraetai area.  Auckland Transport required a pre-feasibility design and access solution for a bus/ferry connection including a bus stop and bus turn around area plus some minor improvements at an intersection close to the bus stop.  The solution was to preferably cost less than $300,000.

The Solution

The preferred option includes a single kerbside bus stop with a new hardstand area for passengers plus bus shelter, a bus turnaround through the centre of the public car park and some minor changes to the Jack Lachlan Drive/ Internal Road intersection.  There is a net loss of 7 parking spaces.  The expected cost is $162,500.

The Outcome

The study demonstrated a viable low cost and low risk solution that could be delivered as an operational improvement, avoiding the need to additional funding and expediting delivery.
