Austroads identified the need for a smart tool to help determine the best pedestrian crossing facilities for a wide array of roading environments. They wanted to be able to assess the economic efficiency of a range of solutions, as well as the ‘walkability’ of each crossing, and so they enlisted our services to create an interactive online tool.
We undertook an international literature review to understand what tools were currently available and establish best practice guidelines and economic evaluation methods applicable to New Zealand and Australia. We also conducted a number of surveys to gain insights into pedestrians and their perceptions on safety. We then developed a web-based tool that provides practitioners with a detailed analysis of a range of solutions and scenarios.
The tool was designed to help Austroads, and practitioners throughout New Zealand and Australia, to generate better outcomes, and to support funding applications.
