Prior to joining Abley Alex spent a number of years working for the European Environment Agency in Copenhagen as a spatial consultant, before returning to the UK to work as a technical lead in the nuclear industry. Alex has worked on wide range of projects, from developing automated processing frameworks to collect, interpret and communicate out on environmental data streams incoming from 27 countries, to project managing the establishment of nuclear emergency management GIS systems. Alex is an FME Certified professional.
What made you decide to become a GIS Consultant?
Having enjoyed the GIS elements in my bachelor’s degree I decided to pursue a Masters course in GIS at the University of Nottingham. As part of my MSc I undertook a GIS Internship at the European Environment Agency which led me down the path of GIS Consultancy.
What did you do before joining Abley?
Before joining Abley, I was working as a Technical Lead in the UK Nuclear Industry.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy how working at Interpret involves wearing a number of different hats. From technical leadership and hands on development to business development and client interaction, there are always challenges and opportunities. I thrive in an energetic environment and Interpret really is a lively place to work.
What is the most challenging thing about your job?
I think one of the major challenges is understanding all of the opportunities which can develop by combining data from different sources. Utilizing FME really helps to realize those opportunities as it allows us to bring the full spectrum of our data together to interact intrinsically, regardless of format or structure.
What has been your career highlight so far?
I felt a real sense of satisfaction being part of a team which implemented automated analysis frameworks to streamline the pan European spatial data reporting process. Reducing the processing operation from months of manual analyses to a few hours was a great feeling. Gaining and maintaining FME Certified professional status is also something I am proud of.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I really enjoy exploring the great outdoors with my growing family - packing a picnic, hopping in the car and seeing where the road takes us. On rainy days you can find me building Lego or letting my 4 year old son win races on MarioKart. I’m hoping to take up sea fishing when the season comes around.
