Transportation Engineer

About Eranga

Eranga completed his Bachelor of Engineering in Civil Engineering from the University of Queensland.  Before joining Abley, Eranga worked as a Graduate Engineer with the New Zealand Transport Agency where he developed interests in transport planning, road safety and intelligent transport systems (ITS).

What Eranga has to say:

What made you decide to become a transportation engineer?

Throughout university, my goal was to become a structural engineer or work in the mines, so I must admit I only developed an interest in transportation engineering while working in the industry.  Getting to know how reliant we are on a good transport network for national, regional and community development was a big eye opener for me.

What did you do before joining Abley?

I worked as a graduate engineer for the New Zealand Transport Agency where I was exposed to a variety of transportation engineering facets, including traffic and safety, maintenance and operations, transport planning and project management.

What does a typical day in the office include?

Everyday can be different with new projects and challenges to work on.  This usually requires carrying out some research to familiarise myself with the subject matter and report writing.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Having a variety of projects to work on, always learning something new and the friendly and supportive nature of my colleagues.  Getting to travel around New Zealand for work is also a huge plus!

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

Getting to know all the policies, plans and development strategies for different regions around New Zealand.  When coming up with solutions, it is important to know how each region wishes to use or develop the transport network to support both regional and national objectives.

What has been your career highlight so far?

Shadowing the Downer chipsealing crew purely as a learning experience.  In a profession where you spend most of your time in an office, it was refreshing to get out and see some paperwork being applied in the real world.  I must hand it to the work crews because they make their job look so much easier than it is.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I enjoy travelling and one of my biggest life goals is to see either the northern or southern lights.  I also spend a fair amount of time in the gym and reading.
