What Matthew has to say:

What made you decide to become a Principal Transportation Planner?

My academic background was focused on all aspects of environmental management and with transport being a key factor in how cities operate, I wanted to be able to influence this in a positive way.

What did you do before joining Abley?

I started my career working in public transport in Christchurch covering both operational and strategic planning needs. Following that I moved to London where I worked for almost 10 years on a variety of transportation and environmental projects ranging from light rail, cycling and urban realm enhancement schemes. For the last few years I have mainly concentrated on electric mobility and how zero emission urban transport can transform our cities.

What does a typical day in the office include?

With the variety of clients and projects at Abley, my activities are all focused on providing our clients with the best service possible. This may range from client meetings and supporting other team members in their work through to delivering innovative and great solutions for the project I am responsible for.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Getting people to see the opportunities that are available if they take a broader perspective. The industry is always evolving so being able to introduce new concepts and approaches that provide a better outcome for our clients is particularly enjoyable.

What’s the most challenging thing about your job?

Our projects invariably impact on a lot of different stakeholders in a variety of ways. Finding the ways to balance these competing demands and deliver the best solution for the client is always a challenge; but also very enjoyable.

What’s been your career highlight so far?

Leading a transnational European project with 30 partners across eight countries to demonstrate how electric freight vehicles can not only make businesses more competitive and efficient, but also help clean our cities and improve our health.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Travel is a must, particularly the places off the beaten track – Ice hotels are very nice if a bit chilly! Spending time with my family and young son take up a lot of time and in the quiet moments a nice glass of wine with a good book works well!
