Transportation Engineer

About Rahul

Rahul completed his Civil Engineering degree with Honours at the University of Auckland in 2015. During his studies, he obtained experience working in the construction industry as a project coordinator where he worked in a team to deliver mid-sized residential and commercial projects. Rahul’s most recent role before joining Ably was as a graduate transportation engineer at another transportation engineering firm in Auckland where he developed skills in providing traffic engineering input to many newly proposed residential and commercial developments.

What Rahul has to say:

What made you decide to become a Transportation Engineer?

I believe that as a Transportation Engineer, we get the opportunity to work on projects that will positively impact the everyday life of people in our society. These impacts can be in terms of improved safety as we develop safe transportation systems and improved efficiency which can impact economically to the users of the system. The challenge in most cases is to develop a solution that will tick as many boxes it can, to get the greatest amount of benefit from the investment.

What did you do before joining Abley?

After completing a Bachelor of Engineering (Hons) degree at the end of 2015, I worked for a construction company as a project coordinator for about three months before moving into the transportation engineering industry as a graduate traffic engineer at a local firm. After working for this firm for about four months and learning the basics, I set out to find a company where I could learn and practise transportation engineering at a higher level.

What does a typical day in the office include?

A typical day in the office includes collaborating with my colleagues to complete projects. Most projects involve report writing and application of engineering knowledge which requires me to be up to date with relevant information and therefore part of my day includes reading, consulting with colleagues and applying my technical knowledge.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy that I get the opportunity to work on a variety of projects. This enables me to keep developing as an engineer and stay passionate about my job. Additionally, I feel like the whole transportation industry is one that keeps evolving. For example the invention of driver-less cars will bring exciting challenges at a policy level which I hope to be a part of.

What’s the most challenging thing about your job?

The challenging thing about my job is my limited knowledge. Thankfully, I am surrounded with experienced colleagues who are happy to help me to get the job done.

What’s been your career highlight so far?

My career highlight has to be having the opportunity to be working on an intersection upgrade that will hopefully introduce the first Copenhagen style cycleway in Auckland. I am looking forward to this project becoming a reality as we will able to test whether they will perform better than normal cycleways.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I am an avid football (soccer) fan. I enjoy playing this sport as well as being a spectator. My favourite team is Chelsea FC and hope to watch them play at their home stadium one day. Apart from this, I enjoy discovering new places and spending time watching good TV shows.
