About Steve

Steve studied computer science and geography in his undergraduate degree at the University of Canterbury, graduating in 2016. He completed two internship projects before starting permanently at Interpret, the first involved opening datasets for public access at the Christchurch City Council, and the second involved creating a lightning strike predictability model at Interpret.

What Steve has to say:

What made you decide to become an geospatial professional?

I have had a strong interest in both geography and software development since high school. This continued throughout my tertiary studies where I was introduced to GIS. It turned out to be the perfect combination of two fascinating subjects and I have enjoyed experiencing their many applications ever since.

What did you do before joining Abley?

I have recently completed a Post Graduate Diploma in GIS at the University of Canterbury. Prior to that I completed studies in computer science and geography. I have completed internships at both the Christchurch City Council and Interpret before permanently joining the Interpret team.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The people. There is a wide array of experienced team members with a wealth of knowledge in various GIS fields. The team environment is very friendly and there is always a strong willingness to support each other.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

With such a variety of expertise across projects and the changeable nature of the GIS industry, there has been a lot to learn. This opens the door for significant innovation in projects.

What has been your career highlight so far?

Completing my summer internship at Interpret. This involved creating a lightning strike predictability model for New Zealand with the intention of protecting critical network infrastructure.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I am passionate about the outdoors and whenever I have spare time I enjoy finding different ways to explore the rich natural landscapes that exist around Christchurch and throughout the South Island.
