What made you decide to become a GIS analyst?
I was first introduced to GIS when I was doing my Masters in Environmental Science in Nepal. After I completed my Masters degree, my first job involved doing research in mountain development helping prepare maps for a high altitude wetland project. With a deep interest in GIS applications, I completed a Postgraduate Diploma in GIS at the University of Canterbury which reinforced my passion for GIS as my future career.
What did you do before joining Abley?
After completing my post-graduate study, I did an internship at the Department of Conservation as a spatial analyst. I also did volunteer work for the Lincoln Envirotown Trust.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
No job is impossible when working with a fantastic team who is always there helping and inspiring each other – that is what I enjoy most. I also enjoy learning new tools and technologies that help me work smarter.
What’s the most challenging thing about your job?
The biggest challenge is producing outputs that are consistent, reliable and meet the expectation of the client. Quite often I spend more time on editing data then analysing it, just to ensure I get the best result possible.
What’s been your career highlight so far?
Deciding to change from being an environmental science professional to GIS analyst was my biggest career highlight. Working as a GIS analyst at Abley is a dream come true.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
My spare time is occupied by my family and friends, particularly spending time with my daughter Yashu. Outside work, I like to be involved in sports, watch movies and travel.
