In our experience, integrating transport expertise into the team at an early stage results in smoother sign-offs and fewer changes later.

Courtney Groundwater supported the the Christchurch City Council Urban Design, Regeneration and Heritage team to implement ‘transitional city’ projects following the Canterbury earthquakes. Integrated into the team from the beginning, Courtney provided transport engineering input to multiple elements of the programme including:

  • providing road safety advice e.g. keeping heavy street furniture away from live carriageways in order to remove the possibility of serious injuries resulting from crashes.
  • liaising with Council’s traffic engineering team to ensure acceptable ‘urban sheep’ design, including design of reflective stripes (see picture below) to ensure no confusion for drivers;
  • ensuring that temporary street furniture was not hindering pedestrian movement taking accessibility needs into account.
  • responses to road safety audits.
