About Dave

Dave has a wealth of experience as a strategic transport modeller. His skills and knowledge complement and strengthen the micro-simulation, intersection and accessibility modelling capabilities within Abley. Dave is also very experienced in economic evaluation, crash analysis, land use development, parking studies and traffic surveys.

What Dave has to say:

What made you decide to become a transport modeller?

In short, the challenge!  I wanted a job where I would be solving complex problems and that’s certainly the case with the modelling work that I do.

What did you do before joining Abley?

I started my career working in supply chain management.  I then was employed as a transport modeller with another consultancy where I gained a huge amount of experience and worked on major strategic models throughout the country. I was there for 12 years before moving to Abley.

What does a typical day in the office include?

There’s no such thing as a typical day for me as I carry out a wide variety of work. I could be coding a model, helping one of the less-experienced team members solve a problem, talking to a client or discussing how transport modelling can support the work of the traffic engineers. However each day always starts with coffee and there’s often a trip to the bakery somewhere around 3pm!

What do you enjoy most about your job?

Probably the best thing is the variety of problems to tackle – every day brings something different, and no two days are ever the same.  The team environment is also really important to me.  It’s both vibrant and supportive and is a great place to work.

What’s the most challenging thing about your job?

It’s an industry that’s fairly dynamic and so there’s always something new to learn. I’m also fortunate to work for a company that’s often called upon to ‘think outside the box’ and devise innovative solutions for clients - which can be challenging but it’s a good challenge to have!

What’s been your career highlight so far?

Graduating with my Masters degree was an early highlight.  More recently I led the preparation of a major proposal for some high-profile research work which we subsequently won,  and is the largest single commission the firm has ever secured.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

I’m a keen armchair sportsman, but I also play cricket and go cycling regularly.  On quieter days I like all things musical and reading, and with two young(ish) children, spending time with my family is a must.
