What Gavin has to say:

What made you decide to become an FME Specialist?

Since learning the software in 2014, to say I have a passion for FME would be an understatement. The program is so flexible, there does not seem to be a data-related issue that can’t be solved or investigated with it. I have spent countless hours on professional and personal projects ranging from engineering project web maps, database migrations, KPI charts and analysis, and even fantasy sports leagues!

What did you do before joining Abley?

Before joining Abley, I was a Certified FME Specialist in the telecommunications industry in the United States.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

The environment at Abley is what sets it apart. Working with highly motivated technical folks who strive with high expectations is invigorating. There is also a sense of ‘Kiwi’ culture in the office that is genuine and pleasant to be a part of every day.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

Challenges are merely opportunities to learn and succeed when given the right support and tools. Abley and FME, respectively, provide both!

What has been your career highlight so far?

To date, the highlight of my career was creating and executing a training project to transfer a 6-month (bi-annual) process to the company’s Taiwan-based cartography team for more effective and efficient map production for the Asian market. This multi-trip training established relationships I still hold dear, taught me how to present spatial concepts and tools to non-English-speaking counterparts, and introduced international projects into my life.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Cooking and traveling are two hobbies my wife and I enjoy together. We are often trying new recipes or incorporating new ingredients into our diet, and, when given the time, we are taking weekend trips to explore the best that New Zealand has to offer!
