About Glenn

After completing a Diploma in Business Computing, Glenn gained extensive IT and software development experience by working as an analyst developer and software architect. Glenn has specialised in designing, building and integrating GIS solutions into a range of client systems and has delivered software projects across New Zealand, Australia, USA and Singapore.

What Glenn has to say:

What made you decide to become a geospatial professional?

I had been developing financial and CRM software for a few years when I was given an opportunity to be part of the development team that was building a GIS application for maintaining the estates for Carter Holt Harvey forestry. After that project was completed, I was hooked on GIS and said goodbye to other forms of software development.

What did you do before joining Abley?

I spent 10 years working for AAM (previously NorthSouth GIS and Explorer Graphics). I started as a GIS developer before becoming a specialist with the Geocortex product and the Technical lead for the Silverlight and Workflow development streams. Over the past few years I moved more into solution design and architecture.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

I enjoy seeing an idea or vision being turning into a reality via a robust quality software solution. I also enjoy getting stuck in with isolating and solving problems.

What is the most challenging thing about your job?

Trying to gather accurate requirements from non-technical users, who have a great idea or vision, and turning that into something meaningful that a development team can work from. Keeping up to date with technology and software practices can also be challenging.

What has been your career highlight so far?

Being involved in several projects that have won awards. The most challenging and rewarding was successfully completing a GIS project which managed land, buildings and office space for a government agency and its related entities in Singapore. Tough project, tough customer!

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Most of my spare time is taken up enjoying time with my young family, but my passion is anything motorsport and I do compete in the New Zealand Rally Championship (as a co-driver). I enjoy most sports, travel, photography and being in the outdoors.
