What Natalie had to say:

What made you decide to become a GIS consultant?

I realised very early on that I love the challenge of working in such a dynamic field. I enjoy the process of finding efficient solutions for problems, and in mastering all the new technology. I had a degree in Geography and had dabbled in GIS, so it seemed a perfect choice.

What did you do before joining Abley?

I worked for Abley (previously Interpret Geospatial Solutions) right from the start in the Christchurch office, but took six months off to travel through Asia before coming back to help setup our Auckland office.

What do you enjoy most about your job?

It’s definitely the people – I’m lucky to work in a fantastic team that’s full of energy and inspiration. I also enjoy the problem-solving aspect of GIS work. I’ve never found a spatial data question that can’t be answered with a little ingenuity and lateral thinking, and I love working through that process.

What’s the most challenging thing about your job?

It’s pretty tough sitting behind a desk when the sun is shining and the mountains are calling, but I try to get out on the weekends to make up for it!

What’s been your career highlight so far?

Seeing my projects and ideas become a reality is pretty amazing. It’s great to know that the work I do is adding value to clients and making a difference.

What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?

Having just moved to Auckland, I’m often out exploring the city and surrounds. I enjoy getting out into the hills and exploring the less-seen side of New Zealand.
