What made you decide to become a Transportation Engineer?
I developed a strong passion for transportation engineering in my final year at university when I got involved in a transportation related research project. I realised how behaviour and transportation are interlinked which, coupled with the opportunity for innovative and creative thinking, attracted me to a career in transportation engineering.
What did you do before joining Abley?
Straight after graduating from University of Canterbury I joined the Public Transport (PT) and Infrastructure team at Auckland Transport. I worked on several PT projects at Auckland Transport for nine months before I joined Abley.
What does a typical day in the office include?
A lot of learning. I am mostly involved in preparing reports. I’m also getting the opportunity to get involved in interesting discussions on various transportation related topics within the team.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
Being part of a supportive and a dynamic team is truly amazing. Also, the working environment here at Abley is very motivating, which is very beneficial for those who have just started their careers.
What’s the most challenging thing about your job?
As a graduate, most jobs I get involved in are first of the type I have come across. Completing these jobs to the best satisfaction of the client, in a limited time frame, without compromising the quality is truly challenging, yet quite exciting and motivating.
What’s been your career highlight so far?
Having had the opportunity to get myself exposed to different transportation engineering environments at a very early stage of my career. The type of the work that I was doing at Auckland Transport is significantly different to what I am now involved in at Abley. I have also completed an internship in a regional transport authority in Sri Lanka, which allowed me to experience the transportation engineering field within a developing country.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I love watching cricket, particularly when national teams are playing. I also play a bit of cricket and table tennis. I am very enthusiastic in competitive scrabble and spend time on online scrabble. I’m also an active member of the Auckland Mt Albert Scrabble Society.
