Reza is a senior transportation engineer currently completing his PhD in transportation engineering at the University of Canterbury. He has a wide range of experience in transportation research, land use development, transport modeling and design, data collection, and road safety. Reza obtained his bachelor degree in civil engineering in Iran and MSc in highways and transportation in Malaysia.
What made you decide to become a Transportation Engineer?
I was drawn to civil engineering due to its focus on design and creativity. However the practicalities of facing traffic jams and accidents in everyday life led me to want to use this creativity to improve our transport environment. Consequently, I did my masters in highways and transportation and researched road safety and public transport which set me on the path to becoming a Transportation Engineer.
What did you do before joining Abley?
Before joining Abley, I worked as a transportation engineer at another consultancy in Christchurch where I acquired experience in land use development and design. Simultaneously I was teacher assistant in transportation engineering at the University of Canterbury.
What does a typical day in the office include?
As a transportation engineer, a typical day in the office includes communication with clients, meetings, assessing, analysing, designing and learning.
What do you enjoy most about your job?
I enjoy my job for its culture, collaboration with colleagues, work-life balance, and challenges.
What’s the most challenging thing about your job?
Balancing the required amount of information, timing, and effort to produce the desired result is always a challenge.
What’s been your career highlight so far?
I have had the opportunity to experience the transportation field both in both an academic and industry environment in New Zealand and abroad which has assisted me in my career.
What do you enjoy doing in your spare time?
I enjoy exercising in the gym, mountain biking and am always eager to try out new things if I can! I like listening to music and trying coffee and craft beer. I am an enthusiastic person who enjoys experiencing other cultures by making friends and traveling.
